After a recent trip to Japan I decided to get into drawing manga. I’ve loved anime ever since I saw Dragonball Z growing up, and I’ve always been fascinated with the great skill manga artists possess. If you’re thinking of getting into it yourself, two great resources are available to you, they are: ‘How to Draw Manga – Getting Started’, which is an online hosted ebook, and ‘Manga University’ which is a site dedicated to aspiring manga artists.
I thought I’d start off with Unit 01 from the popular anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. If you haven’t seen it before, then you might want to check it out, it’s an epic show, and it’s also relatively short (26 episodes at 20 minutes each). This drawing took me a few hours to complete and a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. It took me a while to get the proportions right and I also struggled a bit with the shading and the shadows. To the left is the initial outline I did, I did a pencil outline before that but I forgot to scan it. I’m not confident enough yet to draw a background, I was going to draw some buildings but was afraid I would fuck up the whole drawing by doing so, so for the time being Unit 01 is just standing there, doing his thing in the middle of nothing.
Let me know what you think!
